- Super Bowl Sunday has become an unofficial national holiday. People are making all kinds of preparations to watch the game. It is a reminder of how sports have become a religion in and of itself. There is an expression that is quite often used which is the title of this sermon “Any Given Sunday.” The point of the expression is that any team can beat any other team on any given Sunday and because that is true as a fan, you need to attend or watch the game.
- The same could be said about being a member of a local church and attending worship services, bible study, participating in ministry etc. In Hebrews 10:25 the writer give an admonition to not neglect gathering together. Verses 19-24 tell us why we should not neglect the gathering together.
- People are raised up (19-20)
- From death in sin to a new life in Christ
- From an old way of living to a new way of living.
- Why is it called the Way?
- Way to get to God through Christ
- Way they lived
- John 14:2-6
- People are cleaned up (22)
- Ephesians 5:25-26
- Every Sunday people who are followers of Jesus come who have been raised up but don’t have a clean conscience.
- Conscience: Divine warning signal that something is not right in your heart.
- We should strive for a clean conscience.
- 2Cor. 1:12
- How do you get a clean conscience?
- Come to church and sit under the teaching and preaching of God’s Word.
- The word of God by the Spirit of God brings:
- Conviction
- Confession
- Cleansing
- Every Sunday, people come to church who are crushed and looking for good news. There is some:
- There is a loving merciful Father who loves you, and gives to you, and changes you, and cleanses you.
- People are stirred up (23-24)
- Paroxusmos- to incite, or stimulate
- We can be stirred up in different ways.
- Positive: Good deeds, words, and love.
- Negative: Bad deeds, words, anger, and sin.
- Every Sunday God stirs us to do something that will bring glory to Him.
- Concluding Thought (25)
- Imperative- Do not neglect/stay away
- This is a command.
- Incentive- the day is drawing near.
- The closer we get to Jesus returning, the closer you want to be to His bride…the church.
